What to do right now
Do these in order, as far as it is safe.
- Turn off the stopcock. Usually under the kitchen sink. Turn it clockwise.
- Switch off electrics if water is near them. Use the consumer unit only if you can reach it safely and dry.
- Turn off the boiler and immersion heater.
- Open all cold taps and flush the toilets. This drains the water left in the system.
- Move belongings and catch the water. Buckets under the leak, towels on the floor.
- Take photos for your insurer. Photos of the damage and the pipe help with an escape-of-water claim.
If the stopcock will not turn, do not force it. Tell us when you call and we will isolate the supply when we arrive.
Good to know
Burst pipes: what usually causes them
Frozen pipes
Water expands as it freezes and splits copper and plastic pipe, usually in lofts, garages, outside walls and empty properties. The leak often only appears once it thaws. If you think a pipe is frozen, turn off the stopcock first, then thaw it gently with a hairdryer or warm towels. Never use a naked flame.
Failed joints and fittings
Compression joints, push-fit fittings and flexible tap hoses can fail without warning, especially under sinks and behind washing machines. A burst flexi hose can release a lot of water quickly.
Damage and old pipework
Nails or screws through pipes during DIY, corroded old pipe and pipes knocked in cupboards all cause bursts. We replace the damaged section and check the pipework either side.
